Fan-art indulgence time! Another year, another minor emotional trauma at the finale of a Kudos-produced drama series (Ashes to Ashes last year). So long Spooks, I shall miss you and your unrepentant offing of various beloved characters, plus Ruth/Harry’s stereotypically British repression.

Long time no post. Since the last update I’ve graduated from Lincoln, moved back home and now I’m on the glorious graduate jobhunt. Now that I’ve regained some sort of order (to an extent, I am an ex-art student after all) and settled back into a routine I will hopefully be posting with some regularity again. To begin with, or as a footnote to the uni work, I created this A2 image of Lincoln’s mighty cathedral. It took at least a week, five pens, and I had to arrange an eyetest afterwards, but it was fun. Cheerio Lincoln.

Penguin

These are images for my entries to Penguin’s design awards. At the top is the front cover image for James and the Giant Peach, created with digital vectors and traditional painting, and below is my entry for the adult’s book section, Gabriel Garcia-Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude. The tree and it’s fish-shaped leaves represent the family depicted in the novel, and reference the golden fish crafted by one of the novel’s key characters.

Theme: Cavalcade

Out with the Old

I’ve been sorting through my old projects recently and thought it was worth popping a small selection online before fully moving on to my current work.

The first image was a uni project to create the cover design for a self-improvement book.

The following illustrations were part of a project to create cover designs for a variety of Barclays insurance leaflets. I tried to keep the designs slick and simple, whilst trying to inject them with a little personality as well.

The next image was for a project to create an advert for a film inspired by the eastern European approach to poster making. This opposes the more literal western style, which tend to rely on photographs of a film’s stars to attract the audience, instead of utilising a more intriguing design to lure people in.

And the image below was a recent commission to design a small set of invitations for a masquerade party.

Finally, these are photos of the contact cards I made available for the end of university exhibition. I was rather pleased to find the supply exhausted by the event’s end.

Right, I promise I’ll stop spamming people’s blog feeds now. For a couple of days, at least.

Whiskey

My interpretations of YCN’s student brief to advertise the Glayva brand of scotch to a younger, affluent audience, particularly with an emphasis on using the liqueur in cocktails.

Lloyds TSB

These were created for Lloyds TSB’s ‘Art of Nurture’ competition. The hands image was based on the theme ‘We Succeed Together’, with various friends/family members providing useful hand models. As we were able to submit two different images, I felt the second image should have a more light-hearted appearance, hence a chess playing, monocled owl for the ‘We Act Wisely’ title. Both images were created with quick drying oils on board.

More Uni pieces. This time the brief was to interpret Theodore Roethke’s Dolor, and I decided to create a series of oil paintings inspired by the themes of the poem.
